Ancient
Kashgar is a city and oasis on the fabled Silk Road in Northwest China; it still retains an air of mystery and of time stood still. The surrounding area has something to offer everyone. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of the vibrant local bazaars and markets.

Kashgar's history goes back thousands of years. It was strategically located at a junction of several Silk Road trade routes. Caravans to and from Central Asia - the Fergana Valley and beyond and Inner China - came through Kashgar as well as caravans to and from the Indian Subcontinent. The area of Hunza, the Wakhan Corridor, and the Oxus River could be reached passing through Kashgar. Kashgar is located about 3380 kilometers (2100 miles) from Beijing. Its elevation is about 1354 meters (4442 feet) above sea level.

Kashgar's old city area has a very interesting and authentic Central Asian flavor with blacksmiths, tin smiths, musical instrument makers, potters, rug sellers, hatters, tailors, and makers and sellers of many other items of everyday use. The highlight of many travelers' time in Kashgar is exploring the old city and attending the Kashgar Sunday bazaar, perhaps the largest and longest running Sunday bazaar in Central Asia with a 2,000 year history. As many as 100,000 people come in from surrounding areas to buy and sell animals and goods. Early in the morning you can see streams of people in donkey carts coming in to market. There are separate areas for animals, furniture, fabric, clothing, shish kebobs, shaves with a straight razor (including scalp), fruits and vegetables, and much more. In the animal bazaar care needs to be exhibited as horses and donkeys are being "test-driven". Also in the animal bazaar you can find cattle, sheep, goats, and camels - all in a fairly small, walled-in area. When you are in the midst of all this, you may feel like you have stepped back in time several hundred years.
